Common sense, please…

Honourable Judy Streatch Minister of Community Services Minister, I was very concerned to read today about the family in Chester Grant who have had their social assistance support stopped because of the money they were paid on an insurance claim. The core arguement of your staff seems to be that the family had to prove they spent all the money they received for their belongings and provide receipts. I understand your department has a heavy – read more –

Halifax vs Delusional Calgaria

Some people, especially young people from here who moved to Calgary, are upset with the website the NS government put up: http://delusionalcalgaria.ca/ I love it. Most of the complaints though are around this idea that “everything is really expensive in Halifax” and “there are no jobs” and “the only reason the job stats are doing better now is because ‘everyone’ moved to Alberta”. In central Halifax there is a lack of decent low wage jobs, – read more –

Bragging…

Remember this: The people behind the Stones are also behind the Commonwealth games bid. Using the same math, maybe our $750 million dollar games might balloon to $1.8 billion. We have every reason to be concerned. That was me Sept 25 06. And people said I was mad, mad I tell you! Can I call them or what? In other bragging material: Schools are important not just to rural communities – as we discovered in – read more –

Bid failure leaves lessons to be learned.

As the dream of a “world class” Commonwealth Games slips from the 2014 Bid Committee’s grasp, it is time to examine the root of many citizens mistrust and fear, and the politics behind the bid. There was palpable panic and frustration coming from Scott Logan — the bid’s head honcho — last week. Over the weekend fellow bid city Glasgow’s paper the Scotsman had run a well-written and researched news report on how our games – read more –

Guaranteed income making a comeback?

From the Toronto Star “One solution gaining momentum is a guaranteed annual income for all Canadians.Green Party Leader Elizabeth May floated the idea earlier this year during a party convention in Vancouver. Respondents to a recent National Council of Welfare survey listed it as one of the top priorities for the federal government. And a Toronto task force last spring recommended a basic income to help the growing numbers of low-income adults living in poverty. – read more –

Halifax Locals…

When worlds collide…. here is a section from an article about the debate on Halifax Locals about what do about stupid Jared Taylor coming to Halifax… Mixed-race couples kissing, rather than masked hecklers, might greet controversial American speaker Jared Taylor when he visits Halifax next week.
