Website Update

I have been having a lot of fun learning the ins and outs of WordPress 3.0.  This new theme on Halifax Politics dot ca is amazing, most of what I love about it works automatically with WP 3.0 support. I have also discovered a one stop shop for commenting and comment authentication called DISQUS.  Very very cool, threaded comments, spam filter, and tracks twitter and other traffic. Because of how amazing DISQUS is, and how – read more –

Apology to the former residents and descendants of Africville

“On behalf of the Halifax Regional Municipality, I apologize to the former Africville residents and their descendants for what they have endured for almost 50 years, ever since the loss of their community that had stood on the shores of Bedford Basin for more than 150 years. You lost your houses, your church, all of the places where you gathered with family and friends to mark the milestones of your lives. For all that, we – read more –

Rail debate returns to Halifax

I had an opportunity to talk to Tim Outhit, councilor for Bedford, for an hour or so last week. The conversation was wide ranging, covering topics from passenger rail to community councils to taxes. What was most exciting was the discussion around rail service in HRM, or even to Truro some day. Now I know that some city staff have historically been pretty against any rail proposal, though to be fair, I think the discussion – read more –

Thoughts on Budget 09

Lets just put this conservative time bomb in perspective. We are going to go $22 billion into debt over five years just to FINANCE TAX CUTS. We are borrowing money to lower taxes. For example, my family can now afford one extra double latte at Starbucks per week (not that I would), financed by the government BORROWING MONEY to give me a tax break. Here is the scary part – tax cuts are structural. What – read more –

Site Update

Hello folks, I have been picking away at this site, updating the design, tightening it up, combining my personal url (wayemason.com) with my other fun url (wayemason.ca), and generally playing with design and interface again.  My plan is now that it is all tooled up to actually start posting articles, thoughts and ideas again, though who knows if I will really do that! Blogging is so out of style now I feel like I would – read more –

Harper Has Only Himself to Blame

In part of his column in the National Post, John Ivison wrote: Mr. Harper reacted like the boy who pokes the dog with a stick and then complains about being bitten. “The Opposition is working on an agreement in back corridors to reverse the result of the last election, without the consent of voters…. They want to put in place as prime minister someone [Stephane Dion] who was rejected by the voters of Canada only – read more –

Just call me Your Worship…

Sometimes, life deals you a hand and you just are not sure how to play it.  Today is one of those days. This week, if you open the Coast – Halifax’s alternative weekly – you will see the list of reader voted “Best of Halifax” results.  Read the first page, and the section is “City People.”  Read into that section, and you reach “Best Candidate for Mayor”.  There, you see the winner Peter Kelly, the – read more –

Sad News About Vincent Chew

Many of you may know Vincent Chew, who worked in the Murderecords office during the mid 1990s and was involved with the management of the Halifax Pop Explosion for a number of years. As you may know Vince was working for the ICSSPE over in Germany. I regret to tell you that tragically, Vince was killed on his way home from work on Thursday Sept 25, 2008. There will be a funeral mass at St.Paul’s – read more –

School Board Election Looms, Public Yawns.

Republished from wayemason.ca The school board elections are a short two weeks away.  In Halifax, the new, smaller Board means fewer seats, but the last few years of controversy seems to mean more interest and more candidates.  Election signs and pamphlets abound. It has been some time since I have written about education.  Call it a combination of burn out on the issue, and an interest in returning to anonymity.  Like dozens of parents, I – read more –
