This special update relates to some upcoming engagements regarding the Young District.
Young District
In October 2019 Halifax Regional Council, through the Centre Plan identified the Young District for redevelopment, which includes the Forum lands, Canada Post lands, the Pierceys land and the southern end of Kempt Road.
The area has been a designated future growth node (FGN) that will be transformed into a high-density, urban and mixed-use neighbourhood with housing, jobs, shopping and services within walking distance of two future Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) lines.
The Centre Plan has enabled significant development opportunities in the Young District, including the potential for approximately 11,500 new units or 26,500 new residents.
Regional Council initiated a detailed planning process for Young Street Lands on November 28, 2023. You can read the report here – Initiation Report(External link)
With significant development anticipated in the Young District, it is important to ensure that the required social, transportation, municipal services and utility infrastructure are in place and can serve the needs of the existing and future community equitably and sustainably. To support this growth, the municipality has initiated two projects that will inform the redevelopment of this area:
- Comprehensive Neighbourhood Planning Process for the Young Street Lands Future Growth Node
- Infrastructure Plan for the Young District
